The Hallifordian - 2016-2017

9 Halliford Science Club Report As a Sixth Former studying two science sub- jects for A-Level, it is great to see such enthusiasm from the younger year groups to learn more about science. In particular, science club is currently fre- quented by a devoted group of Year 8 students, who I have now been able to become acquainted with. Moreover, there is always a strong turnout of Sixth Formers to supervise and help, showing the wide in- terest in science across the school. Alex Goderski, Spencer Bateman, George and Ben Holmes and Harrison Borg, Year 8. At science club this year, we have undertak- en a great number of activities. From synthesising slime to crawling under lasers supported by a back- drop of the Indiana Jones score, there is no doubt that everyone involved anticipates Dr Brooks’ next ingenious idea. It was also incredible to see the look of elation on the faces of several Sixth Formers as they learned that we were going to be making rock- ets. Regrettably, nobody told Thomas Imperato that pricking a balloon would not make air flow out from a smaller area and increase its velocity, but pop it instead. Issued monthly, science club is also sup- ported by the Science News Press, a short newsletter which highlights recent discoveries in the scientific world and often highlights possible career opportu- nities. By linking these articles to the current GCSE and A-Level syllabuses, it is a terrific way to show Hallifordians that the science they are learning has wide ranging applications in the everyday world. As everyone in the school is given the opportunity to contribute, I have been fortunate enough to have articles published. Through this scientific writing, everyone is able to develop a valuable skill and keep up to date with everything happening in science, as I have found myself doing. Without the commitment of Dr Brooks and the science department, science club would not be as enjoyable and popular as it currently is. Personally and on behalf of everyone that attends, I would like to thank them for their dedication and devotion, as everyone that attends appreciates it. Gareth Hart, Year 12 The Halliford Science Club has a wide range of enthusiastic students.
