The Hallifordian - 2016-2017
23 invested the dog with so much character that it truly became another member of the cast. Of course, the success or failure of any pro- duction depends, to a large extent, on its actors. Un- usually, the play was ‘double cast’ so that in the first act Mr Tom, William and Zach were played by one set of actors and then a different trio took over for act two. This gave the play a unique flavour and one must commend all six actors for not losing the momentum of their parts. Right from the opening scene Max Zander- Holder took control of the stage as Mr Tom. He and Louis de Schynkel (William) created a real sense of chemistry between them. De Schynkel’s portrayal of William’s isolation and crippling shyness was very effective. Tom Boynton’s Zach was perky and cheeky. Just about everybody watching loved his sparky characterization. Thus, for act two, Tom Snape, our current Head Boy, took over as Mr Tom while Remy Mat- thews stepped in as William. Max Jackson complet- ed the cast change as Zach. It was a tough act to follow but Remy Mat- thews took up the role of William and developed it beautifully. It was chilling to see how the strained relationship with his mother - admirably portrayed by Tiger Wenlock - played out.
