32 Sixth Form Philosophy & Ethics Field trip to Eton College In the Spring Term the Philosophy and Eth- ics students in the Lower Sixth were given the op- portunity to study at Eton College for an afternoon. Eton College During a two hour tutorial The Head of The- ology at Eton College demonstrated how to write ef- fective essays - a transferable skill our students could use not only in Religious Studies but also a range of other subjects. Charlotte Worrell has been stud- ying AS Level Philosophy and Ethics at Halliford since September, 2016: ‘The whole experience was incredibly useful. I have sometimes struggled with meeting the criteria of the AS Level mark schemes and this session demonstrated to me and the others in the group just how easy it can be to structure and execute a good essay.’ Before the tutorial the students had a chance to explore some of the ancient college buildings including a rare opportunity to view the glorious chapel. Work commenced on the chapel in the mid 15th Century under the direction of Henry VI – a devoutly religious Christian monarch. Charlie Block, Callum Davis, Charlotte Worrell and Charlotte Wells, Eton College Courtyard. Charlie Block: ‘The chapel was the highlight for me! The interior is staggering. I was particularly drawn to the fine silver work candles on the altar and the brass cherubs. It’s incredible to think of the priceless works of art there.’ Callum Davis was also quietly impressed: ‘It really takes your breath away to see the sheer scale of the vaulted ceiling, not to mention the massive pipes of the gilded organ. The man-power involved in creating a building like that all those years ago truly gives you pause for thought.’ After a lovely afternoon we all made our way back to Shepperton. ‘I love being here,’ Tarendeep Dhillon commented as we drove through the Halli- ford school gates, ‘but it’s nice to be able to say I’ve studied at Eton – even if it was just for a few hours!’ Mr Cunningham, Head of Religious Studies
