The Hallifordian - 2016-2017

36 The Lower Sixth had another opportunity to speak to various university representatives when they visited the annual University Fair run by Lady Eleanor Holles School on Monday, 27 March. This was a follow up opportunity after the UCAS University Fair held at Surrey Sports Park and was a more intimate setting with only twenty Universities represented. As this was their second chance, there were fewer pupils attending and the opportunity was mainly to follow up questions that pupils thought of since speaking to other Universi- ties in Surrey. In addition to the expected Universi- ties there was also the opportunity to speak to some American Universities and discuss sports scholar- ships. Charlie Allen: “(The LEH) trip was helpful as I could talk to some unis in more detail than at the fair at the university of Surrey as they were less crowded and had more time to go through specific courses with me. I also found out about going to America to study and doing a sport scholarship over there which was also very interesting and opened me up to some more ideas and opportunities.” Gareth Hart: “Compared with the recent UCAS Fair at the University of Surrey, the LEH Higher Education Fair was particularly useful due to the lower number of prospective students involved. It ensured that representatives could give developed answers to extended questions without feeling that time was a significant constraint. Several stall mem- bers also had laptops, meaning they could take the time to show us corresponding websites for univer- sities in general as well as their societies. Personally, I had been able to extract a large amount of infor- mation from prospectuses and spokespeople at the UCAS Fair. Nevertheless, I wished to ask follow-up questions and also assess any differences in opin- ion between people at each respective event. For example, the 4th year student at the Warwick stand at LEH provided a different viewpoint on accom- modation to the 2nd year student at the UCAS Fair, which allowed me to gain a more rounded view of the university. Unfortunately, at each of these events, I have been unable to talk to any students who play com- petitive sport, as I truly wish to pursue a sport such as cricket as far as possible at university and learn about the lifestyle associated with it. This may be due to the fact that the sporty people are very busy, meaning I will only learn about their lifestyles from speaking to them at open days. This trip was defi- nitely a helpful experience and supplemented the recent trips to Epsom and Guildford nicely. Hence, it was probably most helpful to attend all three if possible, as it provides a great perspective.” Off to Lady Eleanor Holles: members of the Lower Sixth.
