The Hallifordian - 2016-2017
39 Orienteering skills are essential when undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. shown how to put up a tent and instructed on the safe use of a Trangia stove for cooking. They set about the task with gusto-wind only taking one flysheet for a dramatic waltz across the field. The evening was pleasant as the pupils played ultimate Frisbee and watched the sun set over the campsite. The morning saw the most onerous and dif- ficult challenge of the weekend for the staff…Wak- ing up twenty five teenagers and trying to get them to do physical labour in their state of zombification. Somehow we managed to rouse the roost and very soon the campsite was a hive of activity; bacon was being fried, curry being warmed up (not convention- al but each to their own) and porridge consumed. Once again the boys were sent on their routes and began their second day of hiking. A day of explo- ration and physical activity ensued and by the end of their bronze practice expedition all of the boys looked worn out but proud of all they achieved. Overall the trip was highly successful and I am ea- gerly anticipating their assessment. Tom King, School Librarian George was keen to help!
