The Hallifordian - 2016-2017
76 Perhaps the highlight for the U13s was the opportunity to perform on the showcase pitch (RE1) at the HSBC National 7s. The match between hal- liford and Ysgol Glantaf was streamed live on the internet and watched by hundreds of parents and friends. Halliford, despite the 3tries to 2 defeat cer- tainly continued to enhance the schools impressive reputation in the rugby 7s world. Watching The under 14s were perhaps the highlight of the season. The confidence of the team is clear and this was displayed in the performance at the John fisher 7s where, on the way to the plate final they beat some huge rugby schools including Whit- gift and Dulwich, losing eventually to tiffin boys in the final. Peppiatt, Manzi, Parsons and Paul were par- ticularly noteworthy in their efforts, whilst the ever improving Aldridge, Curtis, Walsh and Gibbons demonstrated their growing potential. The under 15 team struggled despite some great endeavour and teamwork. Stand out perfor- mances from laird and Clark were pivotal to the re- silience of this hard working team. Whilst they may lack what other teams possess in skill or pace they demonstrate huge hearts and uphold the dogged hal- liford ‘never quit’ attitude. The highlight of the season for the seniors was performing in the Halliford floodlit 7s at Ha- zelwood, the home of London Irish. On an evening with lights, music, rock band and exhibition match- es halliford performed amazingly achieving a place in the plate final against Bedes halliford led by 1st VII and 1st XV Captain Alistair kinder dominated a well-attended final and saw reward to the hard work placed throughout the entire rugby season as they lifted the silverware. My personal thanks go to the amazing Tom Foley and Ethan Job for running the technical aspects of the tournament. It is this that makes it a tournament like no other. The only chal- lenge that remains for these young men, and others, is the small matter of four tour matches in New Zea- land at the end of the academic year. This will be the strongest ever touring side to travel from halliford and we wish them the very best of luck on what will be a magical and life changing experience. Led from the front by talented Sam Stace, who scored several half centuries through the season, the boys won all but one fixture. The bowl- ing attack had a mixture of fast, medium and spin meaning the side could rely on a variety of options meaning teams couldn’t settle or gather momentum. Always opting to bat first if possible, the boys put on some strong totals and with the strong bowling attack were confident that they could defend these. Bar some sloppy and cheap byes at times, the boys fielded well and were good for all of their wins. Sam Stace has already been mention but other notable performers were Eddie Clark who also scored sever- al 50’s with some fantastically timed and easy look- ing shots as well as opening the bowling with some aggressive speed. Marley Tavaziva was also a very consistent bowler and was able to score some good runs. Keaton Mengers also bowled well and was great at keeping the score board ticking over as an opener. Awork on for the whole team would be their alertness and concentration in the field as cheap runs were occasionally conceded. On the whole it was an
