The Hallifordian - 2016-2017
90 pitch this year. Sam Cheah, Beau Easby-Keating, Jack Healy, Jack Jesty, and Tom Snape were regular members of a successful 1XV, with Beau and both Jacks being awarded their colours this year. Con- gratulations must go Beau Easby-Keating and Wil- liam Harvey who were selected for this year’s Head- master’s XV. The Inter-House Competition was extremely closely fought. In the Junior Competition the Year 7s finished tied for first place with Wad- ham after a ding-dong battle. Year 8 did very well to finish second, and Year 9 were a bit unlucky to come third. This meant that we came 1st overall. In the Senior Competition both the Year 10s and com- bined Year 11, 12, 13 teams battled very hard to both finish in second place, resulting in Russell finishing 1st equal with Greville and Desborough. To win the Juniors and share the spoils in the Seniors is a fan- tastic achievement, and I would like to thank all the boys who put their bodies on the line for the House. This year the House did superbly well in the Cross-Country. The Year 7, 8, and 10 teams all won, leading to us winning both the Junior and Senior Competitions. In the football the Senior side won the competition with some very silky football. Year 9 came second, Year 7 third, and Year 10 last. The Inter-House cricket saw a mixed bag of results. The Seniors performed very well to win their competition. However sadly the Junior teams strug- gled this year. Hopefully they will find a resurgence of form in 2018. In this year’s basketball competi- tion the Seniors and Intermediates finished third and the Juniors were the winners. Ethan Job won the Halliford Golf Competition, and Russell missed out by one stroke in the Inter-House. Sports Day took place at the Kingsmeadow Stadium this year, and the Russell boys put on a fantastic performance. Individual winners includ- ed: Will Harvey, Conor Glynn, Finlay Strike, Kian McGrath, Ed Dawson, Sankaran Suseelan, Johnny Davies, Jack Jesty, Shayam Suseelan, Sam Cheah, Alex McConnon, Rowan Spencer, Luke Ingles, Raff Hollister, Matthew Robertson, Jed Aldridge, Huw Morley, Shaan Suseelan, and Jacob Paterson. We did very well in the relays, with the U12B, U13A, U15C, U15B, and U15A sides all winning. The U19 relay team of Jack Jesty, Charlie Joyce, Shayam Su- seelan, and Sam Cheah won their race and broke the school record by two seconds, which was a fantastic achievement. At the end of the day the results were in, and for the first time in a number of years Russell were announced as the winners by forty points. What pleased me so much about this was the effort that everyone put in. It was not just about those who won their events, but also those who worked so hard to finish third instead of fourth, or sixth instead of sev- enth. This really was a whole house achievement. We have had a fantastic year for achieve- ments, and this culminated on speech day. A num- ber of Russell boys deservedly won prizes for their achievements over the year. It then came time for the Merit Shield. Finally, after a number of years, Rus- sell were announced as the winners and Tom Foley collected the Shield. This was a fitting way for him to end his time at Halliford, and was exactly what all the boys deserved for their efforts this year. It only remains for me to wish the New Zea- land Rugby Tourists the very best of luck. To our leavers, I hope that you will remember your time in Russell with great fondness, and I wish you all the best for the future. To everyone else, I hope that you all have a very enjoyable summer holiday, and I look forward to seeing you again in September.
